Today, we read the story, Something Beautiful by Sharon Dennis Wyeth and illustrated by Chris K. Soentpiet. "Something Beautiful is a story of a young girl who longs to see beyond the scary sights on the sidewalk and the angry scribbling in the halls of her building. When her teacher writes the word 'BEAUTIFUL' on the blackboard, the girl decides to look for something beautiful in her neighbourhood. Her neighbours tell her about their own beautiful things. Her search for something beautiful results in the little girl showing responsibility in her own neighbourhood."
The purpose of this lesson was to help us see the ability of people to find 'something beautiful' in even the most unlikely place and discuss how we can use our thoughts and words to help others see beauty in their life. We also discussed acts of kindness and some of the ways we can be a responsible citizen in our community.
After reading the story, we worked in small groups to brainstorm ideas for where we see beauty in our self, others, and our community. Here are some of our ideas!
